LA RONDE
Written by Arthur Schnitzler

First published for private circulation in Vienna in 1900, Arthur Schnitzler's famous play looks at the sexual morality and class ideology of his day through a series of sexual encounters between pairs of characters. When published in 1903, it became an immediate best-seller, scandalized Viennese society, and a year later was censored. Schnitzler was accused of pornography and worse. By choosing characters across the social spectrum, La Ronde offers a powerful view of how sexual contact transgresses boundaries of class.  Produced through a generous grant from the Arts and Cultural Council for Livingston County and the NY Counsel on the Arts.

For mature audiences only. No cell phones or cameras allowed in the theatre for this production.

LIFE IS A DREAM
Pedro Calderon de la Barca

Considered one of the outstanding Spanish dramas of all time, this 17th-century allegory explores the mysteries of human destiny, the illusory nature of existence, and the struggle between predestination and free will. On the basic plot structure of King's suspicions of his son's role in an impending revolution, the playwright builds a dramatic edifice of theatricality, rich in symbolism and metaphor, expressed in magnificent poetry.

PERFORMANCE DATES: March 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30pm; March 12 and 19 at 2pm.

THE BLACKS: A CLOWN SHOW

A troupe of black actors reenact the rape and murder of a white woman before a kangaroo court and thus begins The Blacks: A Clown Show a play that examines racism and oppression through the ritualistic reenactment of a murder where all the participants are played by black actors -- even the white characters. Written by Jean Genet at the request of a black actor, The Blacks "flows as freely as an improvisation, with fantasy, allegory and intimations of reality mingled into a weird, stirring unity...Genet's investigation of the color black begins where most plays of this burning theme leave off." --Howard Taubman, New York Times.

ARTAUD AND HIS DOUBLE
Written by J.R. Teeter

Antonin Artaud was a revolutionary figure in 20th century theatre.  While his writings were inspiring the avant garde of Europe, Artaud was residing in an asylum for the insane.  Symptoms of Schizophrenia and an addiction to opium would define much of his later life.  Despite his illness he was able to author several books including his seminal work A Theatre and its Double where he discusses the need to destroy present forms of theatre and revert to a more ritualistic style steeped in animalistic desires and symbolism.  It would be known as the Theatre of Cruelty.  This play examines his last days, institutionalized and suffering from the delusions that have plagued much of his life.

PERFORMANCE DATES: June 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 at 7:30pm; June 18 and 25 at 2pm.
